A branch of the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, BGSP-NJ offers two Master of Arts degrees at our Livingston, NJ campus – the Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling* and the Master of Arts in Psychoanalysis, as well as a Post-Master's Certificate in Mental Health Counseling.

What makes our program different:

  • Regionally accredited masters degrees
  • Highly mentored
  • Small classes
  • No minimum GPA or GRE’s required
  • Pace of program determined by student
  • Unique experiential teaching method, no tests
  • All faculty are experienced clinicians and accomplished scholars

Students from all walks of life enroll in the Master's programs, whether to become a professional counselor, to prepare for post-graduate psychoanalytic training, to supplement their current clinical work, or to enrich their work with people in other fields.

Students gain a deeper understanding of people in their full complexity through BGSP-NJ’s integrative approach to learning. They learn how people develop their emotional and mental lives, how people operate from motivations outside their own awareness, and why people interact and behave in characteristic ways.

The only accredited, independent graduate school of psychoanalysis in the country, the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis has been opening doors to psychoanalysis for over 40 years, increasing access to psychoanalytic training, education, and treatment. The program at the New Jersey branch advances this mission by introducing students from the vibrant and diverse New Jersey/tri-state community to studies in professional counseling and psychoanalysis without requiring them to acquire prior training in another profession.

BGSP-NJ, in Livingston, is geographically available from most parts of NJ, and nearby areas of NY and Pa. With a faculty of 100% clinician educators it is considered a model of local, community-based, higher education. In addition to teaching, and private practices, our faculty work at or partner with many agencies and organizations in the area. This gives us a unique perspective on the needs of mental health consumers in a diversely populated area, as well as connections for assisting graduates in obtaining jobs.

*Qualifying for Licensure as a Professional Counselor in New Jersey | The Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling curriculum is approved by the New Jersey Professional Counseling Examiners Committee as meeting its standards.
